Week of Prayer
Sunday 21st - Saturday 27th May
7.45pm - 8.45pm in The Annexe (drinks from 7.30pm)
Prayer changes things. I believe that with all my heart. It is one of our highest privileges: that we can talk to our Father about anything and everything.
Prayer is also one of our most effective means of achieving our mission on earth; we can have all the best ideas in the world and still be fruitless if we don't pray.
For these and many other reasons we prioritise prayer in our church calendar.
Three times a year we gather for our Week of Prayer. No band, no slides, no fanfare, just humble hearts together before God. One hour of fervent prayer. Seven nights in a row.
Please join us.
Below you'll find you'll find a suggested focus and prayer tip for each day.
Sunday 21st May
PRAYER FOCUS: Family – a cause and a purpose of maturity
PRAYER FUEL: Ephesians 4:15-16
Let’s pray that being part of the City Church family causes us all to mature…AND that the more we mature, the more connected to the City Church family we become.
Why not listen to Daniel’s sermon from 14th May if you didn’t hear it?
HOW TO PRAY – TIP: God can do everything He wants to do without our prayers. But He has given us the privilege of being involved in what He’s doing: He responds when we pray! So pray with confidence – God can do anything! And pray with hunger – He is our only hope.
Monday 22nd May
PRAYER FOCUS: Gospel-centred discipleship
PRAYER FUEL: Titus 2:11-14
Let’s celebrate the gospel together and pray that our discipleship will not be rules-centred, or self-centred, but gospel-centred.
HOW TO PRAY – TIP: Prayer doesn’t have to be on your own, indoors, sat down, quiet or long. Be creative in when, where and how you pray. Why not pray with someone else?
Tuesday 23rd May
PRAYER FOCUS: Mission – only God can Save
PRAYER FUEL: Ephesians 2:1-10
We want to see people start following Jesus. Only God can make this happen. Ask Him to!
HOW TO PRAY – TIP:
“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us – whatever we ask – we know that we have what we asked of him.” (1 John 5:14-15 NIV)
Rather than hoping God will fit in with your agenda, work out what He wants to do and pray about that!
Wednesday 24th May
PRAYER FOCUS: Mission – we have a role: words, works, wonders
PRAYER FUEL: Colossians 4:5-6
Our role in God’s mission involves words, works and wonders. Let’s pray for all of us to be doing more of all of these.
Why not listen to Mike Betts’ sermon from 23rd April if you didn’t hear it?
HOW TO PRAY – TIP: Imagine fasting as the exclamation mark(!), the bold type, the underlining of our prayers. We don’t twist God’s arm by fasting, but we show Him that we’re serious. Could you fast at all this week?
Thursday 25th May
PRAYER FOCUS: Discipleship – worshipping, obeying and being changed
PRAYER FUEL: Matthew 28:16-20
A Christian disciple is someone who is increasingly worshipping God the Father, obeying Jesus and being changed by the Spirit in all of life. Let’s pray for this to be true of all of us.
See the “Everyday Encounter” and “Everyday Expectation” paragraphs of the new year prophecy.
HOW TO PRAY – TIP: Remember this from Luke? “I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity he will surely get up and give you as much as you need.” (Luke 11:8 NIV) Don’t be shy!
Friday 26th May
PRAYER FOCUS: Family – sharing our lives
PRAYER FUEL: Acts 4:32-35
Let’s pray that we will learn what it means to be family to each other 24/7, not just in two meetings per week.
Why not listen to Sarah’s sermon from 21st May if you didn’t hear it?
HOW TO PRAY – TIP: There are plenty of prayers in the Bible we can use as inspiration. Have you tried praying through each line of the Lord’s Prayer (Luke 11:2-4)? What about choosing one of Paul’s prayers, or a Psalm, and making it your own?
Saturday 27th May
PRAYER FOCUS: Discipleship – helping each other to mature
PRAYER FUEL: Hebrews 10:24-25
Disciples help each other to increasingly worship God the Father, obey Jesus and be changed by the Spirit in all of life. Let’s pray that every single relationship is City Church reflects this.
See the “Everyday Encouragement” paragraph of the new year prophecy
HOW TO PRAY – TIP: What about writing your prayers? Or drawing them? Or singing them?
