WHAT: A GROUP OF MEN WHO GOVERN THE CHURCH
LEADER: DANIEL GOODMAN
Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church
and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord,
in whom they had put their trust.
Acts 14:23 (NIV)
JESUS IS THE HEAD
The Bible is clear that God the Father has established Jesus as the Head of the church. All our life and growth comes from our union with Him. Jesus is the Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Senior Pastor and Teacher in the worldwide church. Through Jesus, God shepherds and leads his church.
The Bible says that apostles are first in the church. This means that we submit to the teachings/doctrine that the early apostles established in the church (found in the New Testament). It also means that we receive modern-day apostles into the church. As part of Relational Mission (Newfrontiers), we benefit from this kind of input and oversight. They lay good foundations, equip the church for service and make sure the local leaders in the church are acting in a godly way and not causing harm.
As head of the church, Jesus leads these apostles to spot and appoint men who are committed members of that local congregation, to bring direction, teach the Bible and keep order in the church, as well as keeping a look out for wolves sneaking into the church in sheep’s clothing. The Bible refers to these men as elders or overseers or pastors and uses these terms interchangeably. City Church is led by a team of elders.
DANIEL GOODMAN (STAFF)
Daniel leads the team that leads the church. He has been a designer, a musician and a pizza waiter before working in his dream job, as a leader in this church. Daniel is married to Anna and they have two sons.
MIKE FRISBY (STAFF)
Mike brings a wealth of experience and wisdom to the team from his years as a banker in the City and then as a Baptist Minister. He and Denise have three grown children and four grandchildren.
Recently retired from a career in agri-business Jon and his wife Miriam now have more opportunity to do what they love best – investing in and encouraging others to be disciples of Christ. Supporting marriage and family life is also a particular focus for them. They have three sons and “nearly” four grandchildren.
Matt turned up in the early days of City Church as a fresher (Engineering, Pembroke). Since then he has married the lovely Heather and the two of them have three sons. Matt designs microchips, loves to worship and is the Chair of Directors.
SIMEON DRY (STAFF)
Simeon served the church as an intern after graduating and before becoming a physics teacher. He has since joined the church staff and eldership team and has a special interest in preaching and equipping others to do the same. He and Emily are about to be parents.
